Healthcare Assistant-Diploma Program

BC is currently facing worker shortages in health occupations, and due to our aging population, employment in this field is expected to grow!

Duties are increasingly being assigned to care aides in home and in extended and intermediate care facilities, and this program gives you the practical and personal skills required to fill these positions.

This program teaches from the new 2015 curriculum.

Practicum

Job Search

40 weeks (approximately 800 hours) total

  • 26 weeks of instruction in the classroom and lab
  • 14 weeks of practicum

Students Supply:

  • Loose-leaf paper
  • 3-ring binder
  • Flash drive
  • Pens/pencils/highlighters
  • Industry-appropriate attire (closed-toe, non-slip shoes and uniform scrubs)

PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Meeting with an Admissions Advisor
  • Confirmation of “mature student status” (19 years or older, and out of school for 1 full year) OR if under 19, evidence of Grade 12 completion or equivalent
  • Entrance assessment with a final passing grade of 65% or better
  • A demonstrated desire to care for, and work compassionately with clients
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English. Please complete the following Declaration of English Language Competency Requirements for Health Care Assistant form.


Native English Speakers

Applicants must provide proof of education in an English-speaking environment (a country with English language systems/institutions) for a minimum of seven years or have been educated in an English-speaking environment for four consecutive years at the secondary or post- secondary level, and submit proof of completion of English 11 or English 12 with a C+, or equivalent.

Non Native English Speakers

For applicants who have not been educated in an English speaking environment (a country with English language systems/institutions or who have been educated in an English speaking environment for less than seven years, submit proof of one of the following:
1. Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT): test must be within the last six months: scores as follows: Listening 7, Speaking 7, Reading 6, and Writing 6. This test is offered at North Island College.
2. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): test must be within the last two years, IBT only. Overall score of 76 with no score lower than 20 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 18 in Reading and Writing.
3. International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Academic or General— test must be within the last two years: Overall score of 6 with a minimum of 6 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 5.5 in Reading and Writing.
4. Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) Test must be within the last two years. Academic or General – Aggregate score of 4L or better, with 4L or better in Speaking and Listening and 3H or better in Reading and Writing.
5. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CSEL): Test must be within the last two years. Overall score of 60, with no section less than 50.

BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN

Once accepted to the program but before classes begin, you will be required to:

  • Submit an acceptable Ministry of Justice criminal record check for working with vulnerable adults
  • Complete the Healthcare Assistant Program Immunizations Form, including:
    • Submitted copies of current TB skin test results (within 6 months) & updated immunizations, including Hepatitis B, Tetanis/Diptheria/Pertissis, Poliomyelitis, Measles/Mumps/Rubella and Varicella Vaccination (Chicken Pox).
  • Influenza Vaccinations (Flu shots) are also required annually as per BC Provincial policy. For those individuals who choose not to receive vaccination, individual must wear a surgical procedure mask at all times in the practice education setting.

  • Students are assessed on each module by a test, project, assignment, demonstration of skills or combination there-of
  • Students are also evaluated on professional conduct and attendance
  • Successful completion of the program requires a minimum grade of 65% on every program module – creating an overall program average of no less than 65% – as well as successful completion of the practicum component and demonstrated professional conduct and attendance throughout the program

Applied practicum experience includes:

  • 60 hours in Home Support and/or Assisted Living
  • 220 hours clinical experience in Multi-Level and/or Complex Care

Practical Training

  • Learning modules include hands-on, practical lab experience and often site visits

  • Utilizing communication, assessment and judgment skills to carry out aide duties
  • Consulting and sharing information with other healthcare staff
  • Awareness of barriers the impede communication with clients, staff and others
  • Providing care in a holistic, caring way
  • Understanding Release of Information
  • Provide care in intermediate or extended care facilities or in clients’ homes
  • Work primarily with the elderly, but training leads to other areas of care as well
    • Note: this position may require shift work and reliable transportation
