PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Confirmation of mature student status (19 years or older on first day, and out of school for 1 full year) OR if under 19, evidence of Grade 12 completion or equivalent
- Entrance assessment
- Additional assessments may be requested for non-native English speakers or at Excel’s discretion
- Meeting with an Admissions Advisor
- Demonstrate proficiency in English competency by completing Excel’s Declaration of English Language Competency Requirements for Health Care Assistant form and the following:
For Native-English Speakers:
- Provide proof of Grade 10 English or higher with a passing grade of 65% or better
For Non-Native English Speakers: For applicants who have not been educated in an English speaking environment for 7 years or more, must submit proof of one of the following:
- Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT): within the last six months: scores as follows: Listening 7, Speaking 7, Reading 6, and Writing 6.
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):within the last two years, IBT only. Overall score of 76 with no score lower than 20 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 18 in Reading and Writing.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Academic or General—within the last two years: Overall score of 6 with a minimum of 6 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 5.5 in Reading and Writing.
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) within the last two years. Academic or General – Aggregate score of 4L or better, with 4L or better in Speaking and Listening and 3H or better in Reading and Writing.
- Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CSEL): within the last two years. Overall score of 60, with no section less than 50.
BEFORE CLASSES START
- Ministry of Justice Criminal Records check for working with Vulnerable Adults.
- Completed Immunizations form, including current TB Skin test results (within 6 months) and proof of immunizations: Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertusis, Polio, Measles/Mumps/Rubella, Chicken Pox and current Flu shot.

- Entrance assessment with a final passing grade of 65% or better
- A demonstrated desire to care for, and work compassionately with clients
- Demonstrate proficiency in English. Please complete the following Declaration of English Language Competency Requirements for Health Care Assistant form.
Native English Speakers
Applicants must provide proof of education in an English-speaking environment (a country with English language systems/institutions) for a minimum of seven years or have been educated in an English-speaking environment for four consecutive years at the secondary or post- secondary level, and submit proof of completion of a minimum English 10 with a C+, or equivalent.
Non Native English Speakers
For applicants who have not been educated in an English speaking environment (a country with English language systems/institutions or who have been educated in an English speaking environment for less than seven years, submit proof of one of the following:
- Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT): test must be within the last six months: scores as follows: Listening 7, Speaking 7, Reading 6, and Writing 6. This test is offered at North Island College.
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): test must be within the last two years, IBT only. Overall score of 76 with no score lower than 20 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 18 in Reading and Writing.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Academic or General—test must be within the last two years: Overall score of 6 with a minimum of 6 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 5.5 in Reading and Writing.

BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN
Once accepted to the program but before classes begin, you will be required to:
- Submit an acceptable Ministry of Justice criminal record check for working with vulnerable adults
- Complete the Healthcare Assistant Program Immunizations Form, including:
- Submitted copies of current TB skin test results (within 6 months) & updated immunizations, including Hepatitis B, Tetanis/Diptheria/Pertissis, Poliomyelitis, Measles/Mumps/Rubella and Varicella Vaccination (Chicken Pox).
- Influenza Vaccinations (Flu shots) are also required annually as per BC Provincial policy. For those individuals who choose not to receive vaccination, individual must wear a surgical procedure mask at all times in the practice education setting.
