Legal Office Assistant-Diploma Program

Train to work in the legal profession with the specific computer and legal office skills you need to get started. This program combines instructor-led classes with presentations and projects that simulate the typical legal office environment. Work BC predicts that, within the “secretary” occupational group, market conditions will be more favourable for legal office assistants, and that “those with strong computer and communication skills will be highly sought after.”

Practicum

38 weeks (approximately 760 hours) total

  • 35 weeks of classroom training and a 3 week practicum placement

  • Confirmation of mature student status (19 years or older on first day, and out of school for 1 full year) OR if under 19, evidence of Grade 12 completion or equivalent
  • Entrance assessment
  • English-competency assessment may be required
  • Meeting with an Admissions Advisor
  • Touch-typing skills (speed is not important)
  • Possess the practical skills required to work in a law office
  • Be knowledgeable in legal office dynamics

  • Students are assessed on each module by a test, project, assignment, demonstration of skills
  • Students are assessed on professionalism, conduct and attendance
  • Students are assessed on their practicum component
  • An average of all module grades, as well as the grades for professional conduct and attendance is calculated.  Successful completion of the program requires a minimum of a 65% average grade and successful completion of the practicum component.

Students attend a 2-week practicum component near the end of their program.  During this time, students take the role of employee and work diligently to maximize the learning opportunity and create a positive experience for themselves, the college and the practicum host.

  • Perform administrative duties in law firms, insurance litigation departments, court registries, notary public offices, the Legal Services Society, corporations with legal counsel (such as ICBC) and various government departments
