Veterinary Office Essentials

  • Duties and responsibilities specific to assisting Veterinary professionals in an animal healthcare setting
  • Focused on professional conduct, occupational standards and regulations, basic medical terminology, and patient handling and care
  • Familiarization with the team members in veterinary healthcare and how they each assist in the provision of client service and patient care

Veterinary Office Software Program

  • Operation of up-to-date veterinary specialty software system
  • Comprehensive, hands-on training in all components of the software
  • Skill building in correct, consistent data entry for procedures such as completing inventories, updating medical records, and client billing

30 weeks (approximately 600 hours) total

  • 28 weeks of classroom training and a 2 week practicum placement

  • Confirmation of mature student status (19 years or older on first day, and out of school for 1 full year) OR if under 19, evidence of Grade 12 completion or equivalent
  • Entrance assessment
  • English-competency assessment may be required
  • Meeting with an Admissions Advisor
  • Touch-typing skills (speed is not important)
  • Students are assessed on each module by a test, project, assignment, demonstration of skills
  • Students are assessed on professionalism, conduct and attendance
  • Students are assessed on their practicum component
  • An average of all module grades, as well as the grades for professional conduct and attendance is calculated.  Successful completion of the program requires a minimum of a 65% average grade and successful completion of the practicum component.

Students attend a 2-week practicum component near the end of their program.  During this time, students take the role of employee and work diligently to maximize the learning opportunity and create a positive experience for themselves, the college and the practicum host.

  • Perform veterinary office reception duties, administration or management duties
  • Work in veterinary clinics, hospitals, animal daycare’s, animal welfare organizations, wildlife shelters, zoos, aquariums, laboratories, breeding kennels and boarding facilities
