Healthcare Assistant-Diploma Program

BC is currently facing worker shortages in health occupations, and due to our aging population, employment in this field is expected to grow! Our Healthcare Assistant Diploma is the diploma you need in order to become a registered care aid in BC, and will provide you with the skills, knowledge, and experience to work in intermediate or extended care facilities or in clients’ homes.

Our HCA Diploma program is recognized by the BC Care Aid and Community Health Worker Registry. This program teaches the new 2015 curriculum.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Utilize the practical and personal skills required in this industry
  • Utilize communication, assessment and judgment skills to carry out care aide duties
  • Consult and share information with other healthcare staff
  • Have an awareness of barriers that impede communication with clients, staff and others
  • Provide care in a holistic, caring way
  • Understand Release of Information

Types of employment for graduates of this program include:

  • Providing care in intermediate or extended care facilities or in clients’ homes
  • Working primarily with the elderly, but training leads to other areas of care as well
    • Note: this position may require shift work and reliable transportation

Applied practicum experience includes:

  • 60 hours in Home Support and/or Assisted Living
  • 210 hours clinical experience in Multi-Level and/or Complex Care

  • Learning modules include hands-on, practical lab experience and often site visits

PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Confirmation of mature student status (19 years or older on first day, and out of school for 1 full year) OR if under 19, evidence of Grade 12 completion or equivalent
  • Entrance assessment
  • Additional assessments may be requested for non-native English speakers or at Excel’s discretion
  • Meeting with an Admissions Advisor
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English competency by completing Excel’s Declaration of English Language Competency Requirements for Health Care Assistant form and the following:

For Native-English Speakers:

  • Provide proof of Grade 10 English or higher with a passing grade of 65% or better

For Non-Native English Speakers: For applicants who have not been educated in an English speaking environment for 7 years or more, must submit proof of one of the following:

  • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT): within the last six months: scores as follows: Listening 7, Speaking 7, Reading 6, and Writing 6.
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):within the last two years, IBT only. Overall score of 76 with no score lower than 20 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 18 in Reading and Writing.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Academic or General—within the last two years: Overall score of 6 with a minimum of 6 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 5.5 in Reading and Writing.
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) within the last two years. Academic or General – Aggregate score of 4L or better, with 4L or better in Speaking and Listening and 3H or better in Reading and Writing.
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CSEL): within the last two years. Overall score of 60, with no section less than 50.

BEFORE CLASSES START

  • Ministry of Justice Criminal Records check for working with Vulnerable Adults.
  • Completed Immunizations form, including current TB Skin test results (within 6 months) and proof of immunizations: Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertusis, Polio, Measles/Mumps/Rubella, Chicken Pox and current Flu shot.

PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Confirmation of “mature student status” (19 years or older, and out of school for 1 full year) OR if under 19, evidence of Grade 12 completion or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Excel’s entrance assessment, and/or subsequent assessments,
  • Completion of Excel’s Declaration of English Language Competency Requirements for Health Care Assistant form, and
  • Evidence of English 10 or equivalent:

Applicants whose first language IS English:

Provide evidence of one of the following:

  • Proof of completion of grade 10 English,
  • College courses determined to be equivalent to completion of Grade 10 English (or higher) by post-secondary
  • Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT),
  • Language Placement Index (LPI),
  • Accuplacer, Grade 10 level or higher

Applicants whose first language is NOT English:

Standardized English language proficiency test score from an authorized assessment centre, with evidence from one of the following test scores – within the past two (2) years:

  • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT),
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP – General),
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Academic or General,
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL),
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

BEFORE CLASSES START

Once accepted to the program but before classes begin, you will be required to provide:

  • Proof of submission – Ministry of Justice Criminal Re-cords check for working with Vulnerable Adults form.
  • Immunizations form with completed or attached proof of immunizations

BEFORE CLINICAL PLACEMENT

Once in the program but before the clinical placements begin, you will be required to provide:

  • Ministry of Justice Criminal Records check for working with Vulnerable Adults, clearance letter, and
  • Evidence of a current TB Skin test results (within 6 months)
  • Evidence of a current Flu shot, fall sessions only
  • Students are assessed on each module by a test, project, assignment, demonstration of skills or combination there-of
  • Students are also evaluated on professional conduct and attendance
  • An average of all module grades, as well as the grades for professional conduct and attendance is calculated. Successful completion of the program requires a minimum of a 65% grade in each program module, and successful completion of the practicum component.

  • Industry-appropriate attire (closed-toe, non-slip shoes and uniform scrubs)
  • Lab Materials: Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Hand Lotion, Brush/Comb, Nail File, Pajamas, Electric Razor, Soap
