This blend of academic learning and hands-on training, while studying in Canada will help you achieve your ultimate goal of a career of your choice!

Practicum Placement

In many programs, students have the opportunity to gain practical work experience through a placement with a program related employer. This approach is developed to give the student hands-on, real-world experience in the workplace. These are unpaid placements and will vary in length from program to program.

Co-Operative Placements

Integrates on-the-job work experience with on-campus study. It allows you to obtain professional experience in your specific area of study. This is achieved by alternating periods of campus study with work on-the-job work experience thereby blending the gap between the classroom and work place settings. Generally students alternates periods of experience where they engage in hands-on work and they receive payment for their work. The time with the employer is evaluated by both Excel and the employer in order to support extensive learning for the student.

For the students, this brings:

  • Practical, relevant work experience prior to graduation

  • Increased confidence and industry understanding

  • A better understanding of classroom learnings and how they apply to the working environment

  • Opportunities to gain practical communication and decision-making skills

  • Increased awareness of potential career paths and new contacts and opportunities within the sector

Note: International students enrolling in programs featuring mandatory co-ops or field placements must obtain a co-op work permit from Immigration Canada for the duration of their program prior to registration.
