Program Description

Education Assistants assist students with integration into the classroom and school setting and help students individually or in small groups with assignments and reinforce learning and retention concepts under the supervision of the classroom teacher.

They assist students with special needs using techniques such as sign language, braille and remedial programs, monitor and report student progress to the classroom teacher, and accompany and supervise students during activities in school gymnasiums, laboratories, libraries, resource centres and on field trips.

In addition, they may assist teachers in the operation of projectors, tape recorders and other audio-visual or electronic equipment, and perform other assisting as required. 

Education Assistant Diploma was reviewed and approved by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.

  • Students must provide a high school diploma or meet the age of 18 or above, and provide proof of one of the following English Proficiency requirements:

    For domestic students, a minimum Grade 10 English, or for English as a second language students, English proficiency ability (one of the following):

    • IELTS 6.0 (with no individual band score less than 5.5), or

    • Cambridge English Scale: score of 169 or higher, or

    • TOEFL score of at least 76, IBT only - with a minimum of no score lower than 20 in speaking and listening, and no score lower than 18 in reading and writing, or

    • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: a minimum score of 46, or

    • TOEIC score of at least 605, or

    • Duolingo English Test score of 95 or higher, or

    • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test, or

    • (CLBPT) minimum score of 7 in listening and speaking, and 6 in reading and writing, or

    • CELPIP score of at least 7 in each module.
